Ruth Roman, born in Lynn Massachusetts to Lithuanian-Jewish Mary Pauline Gold and Abraham Roman, was the third daughter in their family. Her father, who was a carnival barker, died as a young girl, requiring her mother to support the family by working as waitress or cleaning lady. Ruth lived in a slum Boston Tenement area in Massachusetts. She was a student in Boston. But she only stayed in school for two years before going on to pursue an acting profession. There were many hurdles to overcome on her chosen career path. When she was in New York she was hired to take photos for a magazine about crime and drama, however no theater job opportunities came up. After working as a hat-check girl in a nightclub, she quit her job and moved back to Boston. In Boston, she made a buck as an usherette by in the daytime, while at night she was a part of the New England Repertory Company. It was her first role as an actor. Her studies in drama led her to earn her degree from Bishop-Lee Theatre School.
